Fire Academy

We accept applications to volunteer as a firefighter year-round, and no experience is required. Interviews for new firefighters and the Fall Fire Academy will be conducted in early Summer. Applications will only be accepted if the candidate lives in the Moscow Community. Priority is given to long-term Moscow Community members. Student applications may be considered if the candidate plans on being in Moscow for at least three years.

The Moscow Volunteer Fire Department conducts an annual Fire Academy each Fall, coinciding with the University of Idaho academic calendar.

Three firefighters in full gear and oxygen tanks work at an industrial training site; one climbs a ladder to a shipping container roof while two others stand below, observing.

Recruits are trained in technical and manipulative firefighter skills including;

  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ground Ladders
  • Fire Hose Management
  • Fire Control
  • Salvage/Overhaul
  • Hazardous Material Operations.

Recruits who complete the course and pass an in-house examination have the opportunity to certify as a firefighter through Fire Service Technology (FST) of Idaho in partnership with the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
